West Calcasieu-Cameron Therapeutic Riding Center is
the first of its kind in the nation to be owned and operated by a
hospital. The Therapeutic Riding Center provides outpatient occupational
therapy services in a nontraditional health care setting. The
horses' rhythmic repetitive movements mimic human
movement patterns, due to the
similarity of the pelvic structure.
These similarities are passively transmitted to clients who
demonstrate improved mobility, balance, posture and function. The
TRC provides a natural yet controlled environment for clients to
develop confidence and independence.
TRC benefits differently able individuals with multiple sclerosis, autism,
traumatic brain injury, ADHD/ADD, Down Syndrome, CVA/Stroke, Developmental
Delay, Cerebral Palsy, Learned Disabled, Behavioral
Disorders, Sensory Integration
Dysfunction,
other
Neuromuscular Disorders. Clients can expect improvements in self-esteem,
mobility, attention, posture, cognition, language development, balance,
coordination, strength, range of
motion, activities of daily living,
muscle tone. The TRC also participates in the Personal Ponies program by
sharing ponies with clients and promotional activities, Equestrian
Special Olympics, Camp Smiling Faces F.A.C.E.S., tours and other
educational opportunities.
Personal Ponies is most pleased and
grateful to have the TRC involved in our PPL program! They are a
tremendous asset to our community and Personal Ponies! Thank you!
